Tile on Tile: The Renovation Shortcut That Works — If Your Adhesive Is Strong Enough

Removing old tiles is noisy, dusty, and expensive. The demand is growing for tiling directly over existing ceramic or porcelain. But old tile surfaces are smooth, often contaminated with grease or sealers, and they move differently than the substrate. A standard adhesive will fail. Our VAE RDP provides the aggressive bonding power needed, while our HPMC ensures complete hydration at this most difficult interface.

The Tile-on-Tile Bonding Challenge

  • Near-zero porosity: The old tile glaze is a closed surface. Mechanical interlock is minimal.
  • Surface contaminants: Invisible residues act as bond breakers.
  • Differential movement: The old tile system expands and contracts differently from the new layer, concentrating shear stress at the adhesive line.

The “No-Primer” Bonding System

1. VAE RDP: The Adhesion Specialist
Our VAE powder creates a chemical-mechanical bond that grips smooth, dense surfaces. The polymer film has excellent specific adhesion to ceramic glazes and a low Tg that absorbs differential movement. At 3.5% dosage, pull-off adhesion to old glazed tile exceeds 1.0 MPa — cohesive failure often occurs in the tile itself.

  • Adhesion to glazed ceramic (no primer): >1.0 MPa
  • Adhesion after heat aging: >0.9 MPa

2. HPMC 6000 mPa·s for Thin-Bed Hydration
A thin adhesive layer loses water fast to the old tile and the new tile. Our HPMC 6000 retains >95% water at only 0.3% dosage, ensuring complete cement hydration at both interfaces. It also provides a creamy consistency that wets the old tile thoroughly, dissolving the micro-dust layer that would otherwise break the bond.

  • Water retention: >95%
  • Wetting score on glazed tile: Full coverage, no beading

Renovation Case in a Brazilian Shopping Mall
A contractor used our system to tile over 2000 m² of old ceramic without removing it. After 3 years of heavy foot traffic, zero tiles were hollow. The cost savings from avoiding demolition paid for the entire renovation material.

Save the mess. Save the money. Save the bond.
