Large Format Thin Tiles Are Beautiful — But Only If Your Adhesive Can Handle the Stress
Thin porcelain panels up to 3.2 meters long are changing the face of modern architecture. But they bring three nightmares for installers: they barely absorb water, they’re heavy yet brittle, and they need 100% coverage to avoid cracking. A standard C2 adhesive is not enough. Our VAE RDP and workability-optimized HPMC are engineered specifically for the demands of large-format thin tiles.
Why Large Thin Tiles Kill Ordinary Adhesives
- Zero absorption: Water can’t escape through the tile back. Excess mix water stays trapped, forming a weak, porous layer.
- Flexural stress: The thin tile bends under load. A rigid adhesive cannot follow, and debonding or tile cracking occurs.
- Gravity wins: Heavy panels slide on walls, and achieving full coverage without hollow spots is extremely difficult.
The Large Format Solution
1. VAE RDP with High Flexibility and Wetting Power
Our flexible-grade VAE powder (Tg ~0°C) forms a polymer film with >30% elongation, allowing it to stretch with the tile’s micro-flex without fracturing. It also promotes wetting on non-absorbent porcelain, achieving full-contact bonding even when moisture cannot escape.
- Tensile adhesion on porcelain: >1.2 MPa
- Transverse deformation (S2 capability): >5 mm
2. HPMC 15000 mPa·s with Controlled Open Time and Anti-Sag
Our medium-viscosity HPMC holds water precisely — not too much to trap inside, not too little to lose hydration. It provides 30+ minutes of open time for adjusting large panels, while its high yield stress locks tiles in place vertically.
- Slip resistance: <0.5 mm
- Open time: 30 min at 23°C
- 100% coverage confirmed by transparent sheet testing
Field Performance
A distributor in Italy reported zero failures on 1.6m × 3.2m panels using our system, compared to 8% replacement rate with a premium C2S2 adhesive from a competitor.
Beautiful tiles deserve a bond that matches their size.
