Waterproofing Mortars That Actually Stop Water: The VAE RDP + HPMC Combination

A waterproofing slurry that cracks or loses bond after one wet season isn’t waterproof — it’s a liability. The secret to durable waterproofing isn’t just cement density. It’s a continuous, flexible polymer film that blocks water ingress while the mortar breathes. Our VAE redispersible polymer powder, combined with the right low-viscosity HPMC, delivers exactly that.

Why Cement Alone Can’t Waterproof
Plain cement mortars are full of capillary pores. Water creeps through under hydrostatic pressure. Adding a traditional waterproofer only fills some pores but makes the mortar brittle. When thermal movement occurs, cracks appear, and water enters freely.

The Dual-Action Approach: Polymer Film + Optimized Workability

  • VAE RDP forms the impermeable barrier: Once cured, the VAE polymer creates a continuous, hydrophobic film that bridges pores and micro-cracks. This reduces capillary water absorption to below 5% and provides over 1.0 MPa adhesion to concrete, even after water immersion.
  • HPMC controls hydration and prevents pinholes: Our low-viscosity HPMC (1000–4000 mPa·s) holds water for complete cement hydration at the bonding interface, eliminating the dry, dusty layer that causes delamination. It also stabilizes the wet mix, preventing air entrapment that leads to pinholes in the cured membrane.

Why Low Viscosity HPMC Is Critical Here
High-viscosity HPMC traps air and makes the slurry too thick, forcing extra water that later evaporates and leaves pores. Our 2000 mPa·s grade keeps the mix fluid enough to brush or trowel thinly, while still giving you >97% water retention right against the substrate.
