EIFS Base Coats: How VAE RDP and HPMC Work Together to Prevent Failures
An EIFS base coat is only 3–5 mm thick. It has to embed fiberglass mesh, bond to EPS insulation, resist impact, and stay crack-free for decades. If the polymer and the cellulose ether aren’t working together, the system fails — usually at the insulation interface.
Here’s how our VAE RDP and HPMC combination builds reliability into that thin, critical layer.
What the VAE RDP Does
- Bonds to EPS: The polymer film creates a flexible, tenacious grip on the insulation board, absorbing the daily thermal expansion and contraction.
- Bridges cracks: With elongation above 25%, it relieves stress around the mesh strands and prevents reflection cracking.
- Seals against water: The continuous polymer network blocks capillary water ingress, protecting against freeze-thaw damage.
What the HPMC Does
- Controls water: Our HPMC 10,000–20,000 mPa·s keeps mix water at the cement-EPS interface. This ensures the cement hydrates and bonds — not just dries out.
- Provides anti-sag body: The mortar holds its thickness on the wall without slumping, making mesh embedding faster and cleaner.
- Extends open time: Applicators get the minutes they need to unroll mesh, press it in, and smooth the surface.
The Synergy That Matters
Once the cement sets, the VAE polymer film encapsulates the cellulose ether. This stops rain or dew from re-softening the mortar. Without this encapsulation, you get a soft, chalky surface after weathering — a frequent failure in cheap formulations.
