Structural Repair Mortar: Why Bond Strength Starts with the Right Polymer and Cellulose Ether

A repair patch that sounds hollow after six months is a failure waiting to happen. Achieving a monolithic bond with old concrete is the toughest challenge in repair mortars. Our VAE RDP combined with a carefully chosen HPMC grade solves the two critical issues: interfacial adhesion and restrained shrinkage cracking.

The Two Reasons Repair Mortars Debond

  1. Water is sucked away before the cement bonds. Old concrete is thirsty. Without sufficient retained water, the cement at the interface stays powder. Result: a “glue line” with zero adhesion.
  2. Shrinkage pulls the new mortar away. As the repair layer hardens and dries, it shrinks. If it can’t stretch, it cracks at the edges or debonds completely.

How VAE RDP and HPMC Fix This Together

  • HPMC provides the hydration window: Our medium-low viscosity HPMC (10,000–20,000 mPa·s) is ideal. It holds water at the critical repair interface for complete cement hydration. The open time is extended, giving workers enough time to apply and finish without a cold joint.
  • VAE RDP supplies the bond and flexibility: The polymer redisperses and forms a tough film that penetrates the pores of the old concrete substrate. Pull-off adhesion values exceed 1.5 MPa. The low Tg (around 0°C) of our VAE powder allows the repair layer to stretch under drying shrinkage and thermal movement, preventing cracks.

Recommended Formulation Framework

ComponentDosage (wt%)
Cement + silica fume35%

VAE RDP3.0–4.5%
HPMC (15,000 mPa·s)0.12–0.18%
PP fiber0.2%

Lab-Proven Results with Our Additives

  • Slant shear bond strength: >25 MPa
  • Pull-off adhesion on concrete: >1.8 MPa (substrate failure)
  • Length change (restrained): < 0.04% after 28 days
  • No debonding after 50 freeze-thaw cycles

The Synergy Note
The VAE polymer encapsulates the cellulose ether after setting, preventing re-emulsification if the repair gets wet. This keeps the surface hard and the bond intact — unlike cheap formulations that turn soft after rain.
