A swimming pool tile that pops off after one season is a costly nightmare. The adhesive didn’t just get wet — it was permanently submerged, exposed to chlorine, and subjected to constant water pressure. C2 classification alone is not enough. You need a mortar formulated for true underwater durability. Our VAE RDP combined with low-porosity HPMC achieves exactly that.
Why Pool Water Kills Standard Adhesives
- Re-emulsification: Cheap or insufficient polymer re-softens under continuous immersion, losing bond strength month by month.
- Chlorine attack: Pool chemicals degrade standard polymer films and leach out unprotected cement hydrates.
- Osmotic blistering: Water penetrates behind tiles through pinholes, creating pressure pockets that push tiles off.
The Pool-Proof Formulation
1. VAE RDP at Higher Dosage (4.0–5.5%)
Our VAE powder forms a dense, cross-linked polymer film that resists re-softening even after years of immersion. It blocks water penetration at the capillary level and provides a flexible, shock-absorbing layer between tile and substrate.
- Adhesion after 28 days water immersion: >1.0 MPa
- Adhesion after chlorinated water aging (3 ppm, 60°C, 30 days): >0.8 MPa
2. HPMC 4000–6000 mPa·s for Dense, Pinhole-Free Mortar
Medium-low viscosity HPMC reduces water demand and allows complete air release during mixing. The result is a dense, virtually pinhole-free adhesive bed — no channels for water to migrate behind the tile.
- Water absorption (capillary): <3%
- Air content: <4%
Real Pool Project Performance
A hotel pool in Southern Europe retiled with our system. After 5 years of continuous operation, pull-off tests showed an average of 1.1 MPa — no degradation from year one values. Neighboring pools with standard C2 adhesives had already undergone partial retiling.
